The deals have continued to change in the past years but I still believe it is possible to find good deals on diapers. How do I know this? Because I am buying diapers regularly! I do the math mentally and have my own stock up prices, but I never took the time to figure out if my prices were the best.
I started by making sure to get an accurate representation of all brands of diapers at stores that are widely available to most of us, regardless of where you live. Yes, prices may vary at your stores, but you can use the prices I gathered to make your own quick comparison to see if it holds up.
While various brands are sold at many stores, the sizes of packages vary. Be careful to factor in the cost per diaper when comparing brands and sizes. That is one of the simplest ways to make sure you are getting the best deal on diapers.
Often times, people say that buying boxes of diapers in bulk is cheaper than buying multiple regular packages. I thought that it could depend but wanted to test my theory once and for all. Here is the comparison of large boxes of diapers.

If you zoom in, you can see the smaller package of diapers are about 11% cheaper than the large, bulk box of diapers (8.8/ea vs 9.8/ea). The size two diapers are similarly cheaper when you buy the smaller packages. But if you go to buy the size 3 or higher, the biggest box is the best deal.

One common complaint I hear from name brand diaper enthusiasts is that generic diapers have blowouts more often. And I definitely started to fall into that camp when I started using generic diapers. These 6 retailers (7 if you include Aldi that only carries its store brand) represent a variety of different store types and I hoped a trend would emerge with one store (or store type) consistently having the lowest prices.
To be clear, I only collected prices on the Walmart website for items that were currently in stock at the stores. (Walmart has started a marketplace that allows other sellers to post items on their website.)
I then calculated the cost per diaper (CPD) so that I could get a valid price comparison. To do this I simply took the price for the package of diapers and divided it by the total number of diapers in the package.
1. Package Size. As with most purchases, buying in bulk always yields lower diaper prices. That being said, bulk basically means any package bigger than the Jumbo size. To make it easy on you, Jumbo packages are the ones that are in the plastic bags. NEVER BUY the plastic bag of of diapers, they always are the highest price per diaper.
So the take home message: If you have an immediate need to buy diapers, I would suggest that you buy the biggest package at either Walmart, Target or Aldi (if you want their store brand). If you can wait a few days, you could also buy from Amazon. If you want to plan ahead, I would suggest going the Target route, signing up for their Red Card and making sure to stock up during one of their promotions where they offer a giftcard with your purchase.
